Broadcast Pioneers member Tom Monaghan
at the WFIL Radio Reunion
Saturday, September 16, 2006
Thomas E. Monaghan, Sr., was a member for many years. Tom was an Account Executive for almost half century (starting in 1962) for the WFIL stations. When they were sold in the early seventies, Tom stayed with radio, WFIL and later WUSL, Power 99, here in Philadelphia.
He was married to the former Mary Mason (not the broadcaster) and they had three children; Thomas, Jr., Gregg and Susan Williams.
Tom was very proud of being Irish and because of that, he started the Irish Stew Cook-off and then other restaurant cook offs like Chili and ribs. All became annual events. Like his dad, he was graduated from St. Joe's. He was a veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Sons of St. Patrick and the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.
An avid yachtsman, Tom Monaghan passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Roxborough Memorial Hospital at the age of 70.
Manuel V. Rodriguez, President of Clear Channel in Philadelphia (where Tom worked) e-mailed this Irish blessing (for Tom) to the staff when he announced Tom's death:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you,
In the palm of his hand.
