The Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia

Emmy winner and PABJ’s 2013 Journalist of the Year, Broadcast Pioneers member Monique Braxton, joined NBC10 in 2000. She anchored NBC 10's Weekend Evening Newscast from 2000-2004. Her exclusive interviews and compelling coverage of breaking news have made her one of Philadelphia's most respected journalists. Prior to joining NBC10, Braxton was an anchor and correspondent with MSNBC, anchored Sunrise on NBC, and was a contributing correspondent for Nightly News Weekend.

Earlier in her career, Braxton was a freelance reporter at WBAL-TV in Baltimore, Maryland and morning anchor on NewsChannel 8 Cable Network in Washington, D.C. While there, she anchored and produced the documentary "Who We Are: Military." She also served as anchor/bureau chief/reporter for WAVY-TV in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Recently, Braxton made guest appearances on The Steve Harvey Show and IVERSON, a documentary about the life of NBA basketball great Allen Iverson.

Some of Braxton’s more notable stories include the 2016 Democratic National Convention , Pope Francis' visit to Philadelphia, the case against PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane, the Attack of a Gay Couple that led to changes in Philadelphia's Hate Crime Law, Sexual Assault Allegations against Bill Cosby, the Deadly Derailment of an Amtrak train, the accident that killed the friend of Comedian Tracy Morgan, the carjacking of Chester, PA's First Lady, the unprecedented Ice Storm Power Outages in Chester County, NJ, Governor Christie and the George Washington Bridge lane shutdown (Bridgegate) investigation, Philadelphia School Budget Crisis and Closures, Federal Investigation of Trenton Mayor Tony Mack, the 2013 Deadly Salvation Army Store Collapse, Abduction of a Philadelphia Elementary Schoolgirl, Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, Funerals of Whitney Houston and Teddy Pendergrass, Political Campaigns of Presidents Bush and Obama, including stops by Laura Bush, President Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama, Rutgers Spycam Trial, the untimely Deaths of several Philadelphia Police and Firefighters, and the Transit and Municipal Workers' Strikes. Braxton has also covered the Eagles,76ers and the Phillies.

While at MSNBC, Monique covered the Clinton Scandal and Impeachment, the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., the Kosovo crisis from Aviano Airbase, Italy and the EgyptAir crash.

Throughout her career Braxton has been recognized for her work in the community. Just recently, she received the Community Service Award for Journalism from the Philadelphia Club of the Frontiers International. In 2014, she hosted Comcast Corporation's Black History Month program. She also received the Women of Substance and Style award from the Joan Shepp Boutique.

In 2013, Braxton received the Leon Sullivan Center’s HOPE Award for reporting inspiring stories on hope for humanity. A Philadelphia City Council resolution recognized her 11 years of dedication hosting the African American Children's Book Fair. In 2011, she was the recipient of the Philadelphia Tuskegee Alumni Associations Excellence in Journalism Award. She also received the Delta Sigma Theta Service Award , was named one of the NAACP's 100 Influential Black Women in Philadelphia,and the American Women's Heritage Society proclaimed her a 'Movers and Shaker'.

Braxton is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of University Women, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Coalition of 100 Black Women and the Radio and Television News Directors Association.

Braxton is active in several public service groups including Links Incorporated, a prestigious women’s international service group founded in Philadelphia, PA. She is also a member of Jack & Jill, Montgomery County, PA, Career Wardrobe, the Sickle Cell Community Advocacy Committee at CHOP, the American Liver Foundation, the Mainline Martin Luther King Association and has contributed to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and the United Negro College Fund.

Braxton graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcasting and was awarded a graduate assistantship toward her Master of Science degree in Media Management. She also taught Broadcast Journalism at Virginia Union University and Virginia State University. She currently resides in Philadelphia County with her family.
